His Name is Jealous
Sleep seems to evade me lately. My spirit is so grieved and troubled as I lay my head to rest each night and pray for America. I can’t seem to shake a reoccurring vision I received by the Spirit of a map of the United States that has the word, “jealous” across it. A spirit of travail and intercession begins to manifest within my spirit and I find myself pacing in my bedroom into the late hours of the night, asking God what it means.
The more I press into this burden, the more I continue to hear God say to me, “Jeremiah, My name is Jealous and I am jealous for My name in America. It is being defiled. You must understand that My jealousy for My name will always take highest priority over the jealousy that I have for My people.”
As He whispers these words to me over and over again in the middle of the night, I begin to cry out and ask Him, “God, what do you want to do in America? Your church is in trouble and we need your help!”
His voice begins to thunder, “I will start by demonstrating to My people that My name is Jealous and I am jealous for My name above all else.”
The Days of Ezekiel
The current state of America and the American Church is not the first time that God has chosen to demonstrate to His people that His name is Jealous and that He is jealous for His name.
Ezekiel 36:20-23 addresses this very issue as the word of the Lord came to Ezekiel and he prophesied and said,
“When they came to the nations where they went, they profaned My holy name, because it was said of them, ‘These are the people of the Lord; yet they have come out of His land.’ But I had concern for My holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations where they went. Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for My holy name, which you have profaned among the nations where you went. I will vindicate the holiness of My great name which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in their midst. Then the nations will know that I am the Lord,” declares the Lord God, “when I prove Myself holy among you in their sight”‘” (NASB).
A Biblical Perspective on Awakening
To the surprise of many, could it be that God is about to act in America, not primarily for the sake of His people, but because He is jealous over His holy name that is being defiled?
I dare say that while many are crying out for an awakening in the body of Christ, God is about to release an awakening concerning His holy name and how jealous He is to see it cleansed and restored in America and in His church!
I repeat: God is more interested in first releasing an awakening concerning His holy name which is Jealous (Exodus 34:14) before He releases awakening among His people.
The Acts 5 Jealous Awakening
The jealousy of God for our undivided love and devotion will always have the last say. Whatever lures our affections away from God with deceptive attraction will come back to strip us bare and cut us in pieces. It is a horrifying thing to use our God-given life to commit adultery against the Almighty.
The same God who demonstrated that His name is jealous in the case of Ananias and Sapphria (Acts 5) is the same God who is active and alive in the 21st century. There are too many believers in the body of Christ that are ashamed of the jealousy of God and they need to be enlightened and reproved. The church is working overtime to make God look “good” and “nice” while ignoring His true name which is jealous. God is not looking to be produced by contemporary methods, He just wants to be introduced- as the God found in the Bible.
When God put His name, jealous, on full display in Acts 5, four powerful things happened that I believe prophesy of what is coming to the American Church.
- “Great fear seized the whole church and all those who heard about the event” (v.11)
- Unusual respect and honor came from outsiders toward believers. The Jews actually regarded them too highly to join them (v. 13)
- The fruit of God striking down Ananias and Sapphira as believers was that, “more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number” (v. 14).
- Power was released to the church as people brought the sick into the streets and hoped that Peter’s shadow might fall on them. (vv 15-16).
The Days Ahead
If God is in fact about to start demonstrating to His people that His name is jealous, which I believe He is, then we should expect some incredible things to start happening in the body of Christ and in America. We should actually expect great fear to start seizing saints as God begins to deal with those in the body of Christ that are defaming and defiling His name by claiming to live for Him with their lips when their hearts are far from Him. As a result of this chastisement and discipline taking place, I foresee unusual respect and honor coming from unbelievers toward those who name the name of Jesus. We will then begin to see the church grow numerically and a demonstration of signs and wonders come forth that so many are believing and praying for. How about that for a biblical awakening coming to America? God is going to judge the church for her sin and revival is going to come because of it just as in Acts 5.
Maybe God’s name which is jealous and the fact that He is jealous about His name won’t actually backfire on the church. Perhaps the part of God that so many are trying to hide right now from the world is exactly what we need in the American Church?
As John Piper has said, “God’s jealousy is a great threat to those who play the harlot and sell their heart to the world and make a cuckold out of God. But his jealousy is a great comfort to those who keep their covenant vows and become strangers and exiles in the world.”
